Ha! No, Stephen, in that respect I wish it had destroyed Christianity as we know it!
I just like how Christians whip up these crises that will 'bring down the church if their challenge is not met!' Does anyone even remember Da Vinci Code now? When was the last time anyone had a serious discussion about it? I think it's pretty indicative that most of our clergy is no better than the media when it comes to taking a passing event and puffing it up into the apocalypse for the sake of having something to talk about. Like I said back then, why the nut are we exclusively reactionary? Why can't we be leaders in art, community, and love such that the world at large takes note of us rather than us continually having to respond to the slings and arrows of their misfortunate agenda?
It's like this guy I knew in school, who would never study for classes and then cram just before a test. He said he worked best under pressure. (Okay, we all knew this guy.)
We try to defend a faith under fire that we have not worked to strengthen and build in times of peace. How effectively can we defend what we don't ourselves know and claim?
Ah, but a proper defense requires time, dedication, sacrifice - just the things we can't "afford" to give. And so the clergy are left looking like a man running around a room on fire, trying to put out the flames, while the party-goers in the room stand and chat.
I've been an Executive Director, an actor, a singer, a minister, an interpreter, a consultant, a designer, a teacher, and a dancer among other things. I have an MDiv in Theology. And now I'm the Director of Development for the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. Go figure.

Oh... that's right: it was a movie based on a work of fiction up against faith.

It destroyed Christianity as we know it? Do you mean that there are Christians today who actually know church history? Is that the change?
