Making MySpace Useless

Posted by Anonymous On 11:33 PM

I was MySpace surfing recently. I don't do this often; something just tells me that I got into the whole MySpace thing too late. It's past its prime. When Rupert Murdoch bought it, I was sure that I was right. I just can't help but think that with as much bad press as it gets, with as corporate as it's becoming, and with as horribly ugly its aesthetics are, that it is only a matter of time before something bigger and better comes along.

So anyway, I was surfing recently and all of those thoughts seemed to be confirmed by one comment. I've always hated comments on either blogs or MySpace pages where the comment only serves to try to get people to come over to the commenter's blog or MySpace. It's as if they didn't even read the post or they don't really care about the subject of the MySpace. This is especially bad with musicians nobody has ever heard of who will go to random other musicians' pages and say things like, "Hey! Really love what you do. Check out my music and give me your honest opinion! Thanx!" I understand the need for networking, but come on, seriously, do these people really think that Coldplay is their friend? Or that theirs is going to be the one page that Bono checks out and thinks, "This is fekkin' brilliant! I must see this musical genius signed to a multi-million dollar deal immediately!"

Now, of course, if you really are a fan of someone's music, then by all means go ahead and add them as a friend! It's fun! Or if you really do like someone's music, then tell them so! That's great! But enough with the, "Thanx for the add! Check out my music!" crap.

Back to the point: this is the one that did me in. It's a comment left on Amy Grant's MySpace. Amy... friggin'... Grant. Unfortunately, I read this guy's post over a few times and checked out his page, and I don't think he's being funny. He said, to Amy Grant mind you:

I listened to your four songs. I think with a little help from God your going to make it someday Amy.Please check out my songs and let me know what you think. God bless you and your family Amy, your an amazing gift from God.Thanks for becoming a friend.

Yes, William, perhaps, with a little help from God, AMY GRANT just might make it in this whole 'music business.' ... Someday.

  1. Anonymous Said,

The really amusing thing is that the hits on his MySpace are going to go way up after this post. And he'll probably attribute it to leaving a note on Amy Grant's MySpace. Whoever she is.

And am I really going to have to go over this again? Oy. Vey.

Sweet Lord of Hosts. That whole comment section was pretty darn entertaining and a bit embarrassing. "Hey Amy, when I was 17, I met your brother's best friend's sister-in-law! Small world! that means me an you n' Vince, we could be best buds! I'll be at yer next concert wearin' the orange huntn' cap, eleveth row. Hope you guys can hang out with me after the concert! yours truly, Buck."

"oh and thanks fer the Add"

I get irritated at shameless blogvertisers as well.

  6. Anonymous Said,

Well, I'll be gobsmacked! I should really check out this Amy Grant's music if its the next big thing ;)

I try to only link to my own site when it is relavent to the post thread. Or when I'm shamelessly stalking and big star. Otherwise, it's just impolite.

  7. I'm pretty sure that Euphrony was demonstrating how to post broken links in the comments of someone else's blog.

Or perhaps it was a failed attempt to drive traffic to the commenter's own blog.

  11. Susanne Said,

Too funny! And I'm with ya on the grammar. My pet peeve is when people use "you and I" in a prepositional phrase (you hear it on the local news all the time, and I've heard it a zillion times in songs). For example, "They gave it to you and I." THAT makes my head explode. I was always taught in school to take the "you" out of the sentence and try it out: "They gave it to I." Then you'd realize that you should use "me."

  13. I didn't actually leave the comment that said "This post has been removed by the author" above. Blogger was in one of its fussy moods, and I got caught in between leaving my comment and Blogger timing out, so I tried to undo the comment.

Blogger is being fussy again this morning -- it wouldn't even let me log on a few minutes ago. So I don't know if this is even going to work correctly...

  14. Hey it worked! So, like I was saying... Don't you just hate it when people leave comments in your blog about how sucky your blog host is, instead of actually talking about the contents of your post! I sure do.

  15. And one more thing (I'm going for the hat trick here...)

You know, the more I think about this, the more I wonder if William really is for real, or just trying to be funny. Maybe he just has a really wry sense of humor that we're not attuned to.

Or maybe he was raised by apes in a cave somewhere, and just emerged last week.

    Hey, it could happen.

  16. Anonymous Said,

I WAS making a joke. I know who Amy Grant is and have been a huge fan of her music for a long time. Granted, the humor was a bit lossed in writing.

I dont use Christian terms for "shameless" self promotion. I believe in Christ. I write music to praise him. I like to share that with people. Call that what you will. I am sorry that my words were misunderstood and "annoyed" you all so much.

    God bless.
