Project Big Boy Update 3

Posted by Anonymous On 9:57 PM

PBB is going well, Cachinnatees. (You can follow the past updates here and here if you're new to Cachinnation Central.) I'm down to 210 lbs! I've lost 5 lbs! It's working. This past week I started taking my lunch to work every day, eating small healthy snacks in between meals, cutting down portions, and being smart about everything that I ate.

I also began working out! I've been running and I also went swimming. I really liked the swimming. I'm definitely going to make it a regular part of my week. I also played basketball tonight, and plan to do that weekly as well.

I'm still not making much progress with the nail biting. Anyone else struggle with that? Anyone able to overcome it? Any suggestions? (And don't bother with the gross polish - I've been there.)

My sleep habits have been up and down. I did better last week. I'm not discouraged or anything; I figure this is a long-haul makeover here.

So how about that? It's working! Got any advice? Encouragement? Motivational pictures? I'll have a party here in Wacko when I get under 200. Be there.

I'm here to save the day!!! As far as the nail biting goes...there's an ancient greek remedy coming in exactly ONE MONTH!!! Can you wait that long??

  2. FancyPants Said,

Party? I'm there. Absolutely. But what kind of food will you serve? Baby carrots and dried prunes?

Seriously, I hope dried prunes are NOT one of your snacks that you are packing in your brown bag to take to work. My husband is starting to pack snacks in a brown bag to take to work with him, and one snack is yes, dried prunes. Ewwww.

Congrats! You're doing a great job. Step by step, my friend, and pound by pound.

  4. Fantastic news, Cach! You've got the right attitude, and hopefully you're already feeling the minute-by-minute benefits of this healthy long-term lifestyle.

You'll start to notice little things, like walking up a flight of stairs doesn't exhaust you any more, you have extra energy to play with a bunch of kids, you feel more at ease when relaxing or sleeping because your resting heart rate is lower, and your metabolism will continue to crank up now that you're exercising, which means better overall health, vitality, and energy levels. I'm very happy for you.

As for the nail biting -- I'm not really very familiar with that. Is it a sort of nervous habit? Is it something that you do without thinking about it while you are engaged in stressful activities?

I guess as a general concept, if it's an unhealthy habit, you'll probably have to find some "replacement activity" that you engage in when you would be nail-biting. I dunno... maybe twirling a pencil skillfully between your fingers until you get really good at it? (But don't chew on the pencil). Or maybe get you a couple of those things that are squishy, that you are supposed to squeeze in your hand, I think they market them as a way to relieve stress...

Anyway, those probably aren't very good ideas, but hopefully you get the gist. If it's nervous energy looking for an outlet, find a better outlet to release it.

  5. Red Said,

Congrats! 5lbs is great! Keep up the good work. I'm glad you've been able to take snacks, it's amazing how much better you feel when you don't eat alot of fast food, huh? Dried prunes? I hope there is a regulatory reason for partaking of such a yucky snack, and not for enjoyment. :)

Nail biting, yes I'm all to familiar with that habit as well. Have the Mrs. pull your hands away from your mouth every time she catches you doing it. Of course you will have to come to an understanding that you may get a little nasty and she will have to be ok with that. (Doing that up front will help you bypass the fights later because she "was just trying to help..." :) HJaving her do this will help you become more aware of it. Sitting on your hands when you notice you're biting can help too. I like to put pretty polish on my fingers and find that if they look good, I don't want to destroy them by biting (as much anyway). That may be a bit too much for you, but hey you used to wear skirts...it can't be too much of a stretch. :)

Good luck my friend. Looking forward to seeing a healthier you in a few weeks! :)

  6. Jenn Said,

    Good for you getting healthy!!

I can help with nail biting.

Wear a rubber band around your wrist. When you catch yourself biting, snap it on the inside of your wrist. It hurts. You may think this is weird but it WORKS. Your brain will associate nail biting with pain and you will quit doing it.

    It's an interesting psychological phenomena.

  7. Sarah Said,

Have Beeki squirt you with water every time she sees you bite your nails. It works great on animals. This is why my couch still looks nice with an 8-week-old kitten running around.
