Project Big Boy Update 5

Posted by Anonymous On 11:29 PM

How depressing is it that five weeks have gone by and I've seen so little change on the scale? (See previous updates 1, 2, 3, and 4.) I used to just think about losing weight and five pounds would drop. Oy. I am still maintaining the good habits that I have started. I just need to make exercise move from a sporatic activity to a habit. Also, to tell the truth, my good sleep habits that were in the fledgling state of development have deteriorated due to fun work projects. Oy again.

My in-laws came for a visit this weekend and my brother-in-law and I had a fun discussion about being goal-oriented with weight loss. We agreed that if I go running, I expect to come back and have lost five pounds. Seriously, I think weight loss is a very abstract thing. We'd all eat better if we could eat a donut and then watch our waistline swell. Right? We'd all run more if fat dripped off like sweat when we did. But it doesn't happen. We eat crap and trust the 'experts' that it puts junk in our trunk. We go running and trust again that eventually the love handles will shrink right down! I know I'm being a dumbass here, but what if they're all wrong? What if the real source of weight loss is concentrating at our reflection in the mirror and willing the weight off. Because we all do that while dieting and exercising, right? What if it's that not the exercise??? What if we're all running without anyone chasing us for no reason?!?

Yeah, I know. Back to the gym for me too.

  1. Tracy Said,

I totally think that a 30 minute jog merits five quickly lost pounds! I don't know why my body doesn't agree.

  2. Red Said,

You keep calling it weight loss...you're not no a diet, you're making a healthy lifestyle change. Get the verbage right and fake it till you make it. :)

Don't get discouraged. If you loose 1lb a week, you're heading in the right direction.

    See you Saturday!

  3. Sarah Said,

It's probably easier to quit smoking than it is to eat right. Eating right doesn't necessarily mean instant gratification. We're too impatient. I can actually watch 5 lbs instantly appear on myself because one week my jeans fit, the next they don't. Then I expect them to fit again the following week. It never works that way.

But you say there's been little change in the scale. Have you taken your measurements? You may be building muscle tone, which is a more dense tissue than the fat you're actually losing. Check your measurements once a week. That's where you'll see the results. I'll even loan you a tape measure.

  4. Fork Said,

Don't give up! Go, Go, The Cachinnator! Go, Go, The Cachinnator!

30 minutes of cardio every day ( mere 30 minutes!), cut those calories, eat right, get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water... you can do it!

Buy a jump rope! Those things are GREAT!

  6. I know that other people here mentioned it, and I'm sure you've heard it before, but it's true and bears repeating: Muscle is heavier than fat. Much heavier. Progress you've made will not necessarily all be measured in the pounds you see displayed on your scale.

Yes, it is a very slow process to see results when you are trying to lose weight. And take it from somebody older than you -- with each passing year, your metabolism will get worse and worse. It will get more and more easy to gain weight, and more difficult to lose weight. But that's all the more reason that it's important that you're getting a handle on this now!

Think about it -- if you just went ahead and lived the old way, and continued to abuse your body, and pile on the pounds, do you think it would be any easier in another five years, with lots of additional weight? Of course not!

You're very wise to take care of this now. You're still young and strong. You're in this for the long haul. You are taking care of the only temple that God has given you.

You've already shown thus far that you have the will power and self-discipline to stick with this. You've already shown that you care enough to make these long-term changes. Rather than letting yourself get bogged down in the minutiae of counting pounds and ounces lost, try to keep your eyes on the bigger picture.

You are healthier. You will continue to feel better and better. And rather than declining into feeling older over time, you will instead feel young for many years to come. Quality of life will be improved. Your lovely wife will have a studly husband, and your kids will have a cool dad who can run around with them and compete in sports with them, and be actively involved in a fun life, instead of having to watch them out the window from the couch.

(I'm not laying this on too thick, am I?)

But seriously, congratulations on making the change, Cach. Now, onward and upward!

  7. FancyPants Said,

You can do this, Cach! You've already changed so much in your life for a healthier lifestyle. Now all you have to do is conquer that non-excercise mentality.

What about getting a trainer at the gym?

My dad is a very busy guy with work...VERY busy. And my mom got him a trainer. At first, it kicked him in the ass pretty hard. But now, after a few months, he's going to gym, WITHOUT my mom. Which is saying something. He loves it!

Having a trainer meant he had to fit the workout time into his schedule, no matter what. And I think the guy really helped to show my dad what needed to be done, for how long, what order, why it was good, ya know, all that stuff. Very motivating.

Just don't go to the SLC. Gag me. I think I used to go to Gold's Gym. Is there one in Waco? Waco Dr. I think.

  8. Grizham Said,

Its always gonna be hard, and I am doing it myself, and I know that you put on muscle as you loose weight.

Anywho I'll be in Waco on Sat. We can work out together.
