Killing MySpace

Posted by Anonymous On 2:59 AM

I've just about had it with MySpace. I can't handle getting any more spam "friend requests" or messages.

I haven't had a legitimate friend request in months but I've had plenty of "19 year old girls who just moved and are looking for friends that just happened upon my MySpace page and think I'm cute." Let's be serious. Even if everything else about the phony profile were true... we all know I'm not cute. It almost would have been believable without that little detail.

How stupid are people? Does that actually work? Are there any losers out there who actually think crazy hot chicks just happened upon their profiles, thought they were cute, and wanted to be "friends?" Do these same losers also fall for the "free PS3" spam profiles and friend requests? Sheesh.

So it all has me thinking about killing my MySpace profile. After all, Facebook is a far superior program with a much more attractive interface. Almost everyone with whom I am connected via MySpace, I'm also connected to via Facebook. Would I miss MySpace? I don't think so.

I'm seriously giving it consideration. Has the thought occurred to anyone else?

  1. ...but then I would have one less friend.

I haven't deleted my Myspace profile, but I also haven't done anything with it in a LONG time so I don't get much Myspace spam. I probably should go ahead and delete it...

I'll be interested to see what you decide.

  2. Well, you don't necessarily have to delete it completely. You could just leave it languishing, with a blog entry entitled "IMPORTANT -- READ THIS!" and a few large and prominent notes on your profile, all saying that if people really want to contact you or keep in touch with you, then they should visit this blog.

I know there are some people who do just the opposite -- have a Blogger profile that points to a MySpace profile as their main page.

I hate all the things about MySpace that you do, but to be honest, there several people I had lost touch with years ago that I've been reunited with there, so even though I rarely do much with my account there, I do still check up on it from time to time.

Oh, and to answer your question regarding "Are there any losers out there who actually think crazy hot chicks just happened upon their profiles, thought they were cute, and wanted to be 'friends'?", the answer is definitely YES, there are gobs and gobs of such losers. Go to any of those fake profiles you mention (and yes, they are very fake, and tend to follow a very predictable formula, and even appear to "network" with many other fake profiles) and look at the guys who have added them as friends, and read the comments from those guys on the profile or on the profile pictures. I can't explain it. The only thing I can figure is that these are the very same guys that call the phone sex lines that are advertised on late night TV.

  3. Cristy Said,

I can't delete my myspace profile, as the only reason I have a myspace is to keep tabs on my teenagers' myspace activity.

We are having our 20 year reunion this month, and I set up a myspace for our class. We had no current contact info for about 50 people, and were able to locate about 30 of them via myspace. It has it's uses...

  4. Karen S Said,

I have my account set up so that people have to know my last name to be able to add me as a friend. So I don't get spammy requests, which is good, because they would drive me crazy and myspace is my only way of communicating with certain friends.

  5. Anonymous Said,

Yes, karens, but are they really your friends? Or are all your friends really "19yr. old hot chicks?"

Why am I pretty sure that Grant Miller won't see the dilemma here?

  6. Sarah Said,

Like Karen S, I have mine set up as a private profile as well as having my last name and email to filter...and you have to know my last name to have my email. Double-whammy. It significantly cuts down on the emails from lonely 40-something divorcees and general male perverts from trolling my page.

  7. Anonymous Said,

I have never thought myspace was useful. It seems like reliving high school over again.

I don't have one, and have refused to get one.

Can't help you there. But I can send you hot pictures of me and tell you that you are cute.. if you want...

  8. Moderator Said,

Am I not a legitimate friend?

    You've hurt my efeelings.

  9. Anonymous Said,

Oh, certainly not that, Grant Miller. I meant that you wouldn't have a problem with the 19yr old random girls.

Just in case there's any confusion: I LOVE GRANT MILLER! LOVE! LOVE HIM, I TELL YOU! LOVE LOVE!

Whew... I went and worked up a sweat...

And, Brody, didn't you do that last week? Are you telling me that you have some new pictures...?
