Not funny

Posted by Anonymous On 11:39 PM

I started putting this post together as a joke. The end result actually isn't very funny to me. You have all been very encouraging to me as I began my quest recently to change my life and get back in shape. As I recently intimated, I fell off the wagon. I've been pulling things together this week, and have actually dropped 4 pounds. But I've got a long way to go. Pray for me, friends.

Here's my acting headshot from just four years ago, and then a picture of me today:

Beeki has been incredibly supportive as I've been trying to get things together, but I'm horribly sensitive about this and way too proud as well. I will do this, folks. I can't wait to post a photo of improvement. I never thought I'd be where I am, but I can be a powerful force when I set my mind on something. I'm on the job...

  1. Seth Ward Said,

Hang in the buddy. You'll find the thing that works for you. I just past the 12 pound marker and have 7 more to go till I reach my "head shot" goal. I would tell you my tactics but it works different for everyone. I mean, how many people can puke three times a day and live on slim-fast and raw bran/ metamucil shakes???

  5. Jenn Said,

    you can do it!!

You might want to check out Sparkpeople.com Great site and MOTIVATING which is what I lack at times when it comes to exercise.

Laughing is also good exercise so I shall shamelessly plug my latest post for a good laugh.

  6. Seth Ward Said,

I will tell you two things that have drastically changed the weight gain to weight loss without 10 billion years of sweating and cursing on the treadmill.

I stopped eating dinners after 7:30, might have a light snack like some crackers or a small bowl of serial at 9 before a walk. Amber and I go for a walk right before bed, and I did increase the fiber, but cut out the huge bowls of serial in morning and night.

    Diet looks like this now.

Yogurt and bran for breakfast. (good stuff "dannon Activia" mix it with That bran serial with yogart nuts and then toss in some raw quaker oats and some splenda. YUM.) it is usually around 11 because I stay up late and get up later on MWF. then for brunch I have been drinking enhanced soy milk. That may sound nasty but I have grown to crave it and it is very filling and makes me feel pretty stinking good. I usually have a couple of cups of coffee during the day, water, tea then at night for dinner I will grab about whatever I want within reason.

So there is mine. Not going crazy on working out or starving myself but I have lost a solid 12 pounds in the past month and still going.

I think the biggest thing has been not eating after 7:30 and a walk before bed. I talked to a couple of fit mid-aged gentlemen at church about it and they both agreed about this.

  7. I agree with what Seth said. The only thing I'd say differently (and this is a matter of personal experience for me, might not apply to everyone) is that the walk or exercise can't be too close to bedtime, or it makes it hard to sleep (I think because it gets my metabolism all cranked up and stuff). They generally recommend a few hours between your last exercise and sleeping, but I guess if you can go for a walk and then fall right to sleep, good for you. :-)

The yogurt and bran, apart from being healthy in general, also aids in "keeping things moving" digestion-wise, which keeps you from that bloated, rotten feeling that people get when they eat too much stuff that sticks together and can't get things moving (okay, didn't want to have to go there, but you get the idea).

The portion sizes we eat in the U.S. are horrendously large, also. The old "eat everything on your plate" lesson that kids hear is so bad and wrong, in so many ways.

I know you can do this, Cach, and I think the key will ultimately be in finding what works for you and sticking with it, as a permanent way of living and viewing food as something you eat to nourish your body, rather than for comfort, social interaction, etc.

  9. The Cliff Said,

My whole life I've struggled with my weight. I'm of average height as you know, but after graduating high school almost 10 years ago my weight hit a dangerous place and wouldn't move.

Standing 5'8 inches tall and being a whopping 135 lbs, wasn't the greatest thing in the world. However it did attract several ballerina's, and get me lots of parts in Theater. During a stint as the slim, toned, model-type in L.A. I excercised by surfing, running from homeless men on venice beach, and taking the stairs because i was always running late for auditions due to traffic. My diet was that of a starving artist, one ramen a day and the occasional piece of meat substance, consumed with lots of luke warm tap water.

After coming to seminary I was forced to sit on my can and study, i was unemployed, there was no traffic in this city, and no homeless me have the urge to chase me. So during my first semester here, i gained an enormous amount of weight...25 lbs.

In order to get back to a normal, model-type of body again i followed the following daily routine...maybe you should try it.

-Wake up (usually about 10 minutes before class starts...whether that's 8am or 1pm)
-Grap a handful of oreos and a glass of whole milk and eat in the car on the way to class (don't forget to brush in the parking lot...no one likes oreo mouth)
-sit on your can for about 3 - 4 hours in class and what not.
-Fast food for lunch...if you do it right you can get by at great places for cheap...$10 at Taco Bell, $8 at Jack in the Box...etc.
-Sitting in the library all afternoon...eating the occasional hoho, or twinkie, and an hourly soda, (coke or Dr. Pepper are the best, but Mt. Dew has a lot of sugar as well)
-For dinner, a big steak (you're on gov. loans and grants...why shouldn't you eat a steak), 20 oz at least, with a baked potato, ranch style beans, and a beer..or 2...or 6 (and not the light ones either, go for the dark stuff!!)
-after dinner grab a bowl of ice cream and a stack of oreos (they're the bookend of any good day) and sit on the couch to watch your favorite TiVoed shows.
    - around 11 if you get the urge, make a run for IHOP, great pancakes late at night. But go easy, it is late, i reccomend a couple of short stacks instead of one tall stack!
-then bed by 2 or 3, before bed i like a pint or so of Whole Milk, it sits well in the stomach and helps you sleep. Chocolate is even better.

So there you go, my magic way of staying slim, fit and model-esque.

Of course it helps if you have the metabolism of 4 teanage boys...

    good luck

  11. Anonymous Said,

    Sounds great, Kat! Thanks!

And thanks everybody else, (except Don Boscoe... bastard!) I appreciate it.

It's funny... I know exactly what to do. I've done it before. I've just got to get my schedule together and get to it. I can.

Here is what I have been doing on and off for a while. The workout routine is less than an hour and the meals are easy to prepare.
