Rules

Help me, Cachinnatees! I'm jonzin' for some Christmas music! But we have a hard and fast rule here at the Bakery: No Christmas Music Before Thanksgiving! Am I being ridiculous? I've never broken the rule! NEVER! I surely can't do it now. Anyone feel me? Do y'all do the same thing or am I a freak of nature? (Stick to the subject on that last question...)

20 Cachinnations

  1. Meg Said,

I totally agree. I also observe the strict "No Christmas music until after Thanksgivine." Let's enjoy each holiday and season in its own turn. Amen, to that rule!

  2. Anonymous Said,

Someone else was talking about this recently. I have sort of a love-hate relationship with Christmas music. I love the songs, from the classics to the more recent. The hate part comes from the fact that the nature of Christmas songs that get lots of play time every year - that they are memorable - kills me.

I find myself humming Christmas songs in July, for no reason, with no connection to anything. It just popped into my head. Now just imagine someone like me, who gets songs in his head and can't get ride of them short of electro-shock therapy, hearing a "memorable" song repeatedly. The word insanity comes to mind.

To sum it up: love the songs, hate hearing them on the radio for two to three months. Give me a week of the songs getting airplay, and I'm full-up for the year.

  3. The Cliff Said,

You're a freak...plain and simple...the Christmas music just solidifies a point i've been making for years!!

  4. I agree with this rule, for the same reason Meg mentions. Each holiday is part of a unique time of the year, each season has its own place.

It is generally true in human experience that "too much of a good thing" can wear it out. One of the things that makes Christmas special is that it is an entire month of the year when we choose to focus on how amazing it is that God came as a child and lived among us.

We acknowledge and realize this the rest of the year, but by making it a special time of the year, we associate certain memories and traditions with this wondrous event.

Now would be a good time to be enjoying autumn, the harvest season, All Hallow's Eve, and Thanksgiving -- and appreciating the present season, month, day, and moment for what it is. It will be Christmas time soon enough!

  5. Rex Said,

I play Christmas music whenever I want.

  6. The Cliff Said,

Sorry Hammer, but I don't think it's the Celebrating God as a Child songs that Cach wants to sing...He wants to put on Red Velvet with White fluffy trip and be jolly and sing Rudolf and Frosty and Santa Claus is coming to town...So please, for the sake of all of us, save it until after thanksgiving. As soon as the cowboy Thanksgiving game is over, then you can sing and watch claymation and 'shoot your eye out' all you want. As for me I will run around screaming...

"Merry Christmas you old building and loan, Merry Christmas Bedford Falls, Merry Christmas Mr. Potter"

in my best bad Jimmy Stewart Voice!!

  7. Anonymous Said,

If anyone has ever worked in retail, you would understand how supremely AWFUL Christmas music can make you feel if it is played too much.

Have you ever heard the "booty-music" version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"? I have. How about Mariah Carey sings anything about Christmas? I have.

I can barely stomach Christmas music a week before Christmas. Respect the rules. For all of our sakes.

  8. Anonymous Said,

    Rex, you rebel.

Thanks for the encouragement, all. I feel bolstered. I can resist the temptation to listen to the music now. And F. y'all's I., Boscoe, I don't like the cheesy commercial santa music. And, Beff, I hate the irreverent booty Christmas music. I generally prefer traditional and/or choral works. I have a rather extensive Christmas music collection by some of the best musicians in the world.

(And I do confess a weakness for all of the Amy Grant Christmas albums.)

I can make it to Thanksgiving!

  11. Moderator Said,

I agree with your co-workers, but most of Elvis' Xmas music is barely Xmas music. In fact he sounds drunk or high for most of it. But I get weepy everytime I hear it since that's all my family listened to on Xmas growing up.

  12. Red Said,

    Yeah Amy Grant Christmas!!! :)

For now, check our our my space page for a great holloween classic...well classic might be a stretch, but it's good fun anyway.

  13. Sarah Said,

Boscoe has OBVIOUSLY never been to Edmond. That might work for El Reno, but not Edmond.

And Cach, you're just like my little sister...too eager! Just follow the stinkin' rule.

  14. Tracy Said,

Mmm. I'm with Beeki on this one. Gotta give Thanksgiving its due. However, you can totally stretch Christmas out until Jan. 6th...the official 12th day of Christmas, commemorating the arrival of the 3 kings. That's what I do!

  15. Anonymous Said,

Grant Miller, drunk people singing Xmas music doesn't make me think of Elvis as fast as it makes me think of family reunions. (We're Baptists.)

    Boscoe = bastard.

And don't worry, I'll follow the rules. I'm the one who's so fastidious about them. Beeki always wants to cheat. I just find myself really wanting to hear some of the good choral works. I self-soothed by playing a little Randall Thompson on the ipod today.

Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Xmas music.
