Truth Matters

Roger Olson, a favorite professor of mine from seminary, has written a feature for the Waco Tribune-Herald. It is titled "Truth Matters." Its basic premise is that Christianity is more than a methodology for achieving good feelings. He's right, of course. Read his feature for yourself and tell me what you think. Why do we value feeling over truth so often in religion? Is religion, Christianity in particular, not supposed to make some claim on truth? On something beyond how we feel moment to moment? How does your experience and/or church stack up?

I deeply value truth. For example, it is true that when Team A&M scores 31 points, and Team B scores 21 points, then Team A&M has "outscored" Team B and wins the game.

Well, someday those Aggies can relive the glory days to the Baylor guys that they work for.

“Is what my church professes really true?” and “Is what I’m confessing real?”

I agree with him whole-heartedly. I just wonder what is the "canon" that we that we use to measure this truth? That is the problem with unity in America is that it is based of this pietism that is self-serving rather than truth serving. Coming to this conclusion is the first step. Then we have to ask ourselves which theologians and religious thinkers are responsible for this movement and just when and where did we veer off.
