He Qi

Here's another artist to highlight. His name is He Qi. This guy is a Chinese Christian who does awesomely stylized Biblical scenes in his work. I've used one of his works in a previous post.

From his website, "He hopes to help change the "foreign image" of Christianity in China by using artistic language, and at the same time, to supplement Chinese Art the way Buddhist art did in ancient times."

Now that's pretty cool! That's using art as a communicative tool as well as an expressive one. And it is using a culture's unspoken language to introduce the gospel to a Biblically illiterate society. The funny thing is... we in America could use the same thing! Argue if you will, but America today is a post-Christian society. We are no longer Biblically literate and Christianese is not the common parlance of our masses. I personally am okay with that. Faith must be more than just culture.

So what do you think of his work? And do we need someone using artistic language here in America to change the "foreign image" of Christianity we find here?

  1. Meg Said,

A very good suggestion--I like his work. I came across it earlier this year and used one of his paintings in an Easter post. Nice choice, Cach!
