When Doves Cry

Posted by Anonymous On 11:34 PM

Today was Pentecost Sunday. This is the day that the Church celebrates the Holy Spirit coming down to be with us. So naturally, churches across the country celebrated this morning. My church also got into the act. Pastor Julie unveiled a bird cage with two doves inside. Doves are traditional symbols of the Holy Spirit. She announced that all the children and youth should accompany her out the side door to release the doves to symbolize the Holy Spirit going out into the world. She took the handheld microphone, stepped outside, and gave a play-by-play. We couldn't see anything, so here's what we heard:

Julie: Okay, kids... here we go! ... ... well... it's a bit trickier than you'd think... ... ... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!

At this point, Julie appears back in the doorway:

Julie: Well, it's a little difficult when the bird flies into the side of the building...

Laughter ensued. It turns out the two doves were cage born and raised and had no desire to leave the cage. In fact, after knocking themselves retarded on the building, they came straight back to the cage. Not quite the symbolism she was going for I think...

  1. Meg Said,

That's so funny. At my church, the kids had red and orange streamers tied on poles that they kept waving around to symbolize the tongues of fire. Oh we also sang some sort of birthday song and had a birthday cake to celebrate the birth of the church.

  2. Anonymous Said,

Were any animals harmed in the execution of that celebration? Because here in Wacko, we don't just let birds go flying around freely...

The Truett smartasses were actually joking afterward that we were surprised no one tried to shoot the birds the second they were released. Which led to my idea of shooting a spoof video where the church releases the doves and Dick Cheney pops out from behind a bush and blows them away.

  3. That's pretty funny, your spoof about Dick Cheney. But to be accurate he would have to miss the doves and hit you.

This Pentecost thing is interesting to me. I've never been in a church that made a big deal (or even made mention, for that matter) of Pentecost Sunday.

I mean, I've heard lots of teaching about Pentecost and know the scriptures and stuff, but I'm talking about actually acknowledging it on Pentecost Sunday.

Maybe I'm just part of some weird cult, and not the true church at all!

  4. FancyPants Said,

Hey, I think you should re-record that song with Beeki singing the echo parts in the background. Ya know, "Sheeee's never saaatisfy-yy-yy"

I love that song. It's an automatic head bobbing song. Incapable of listening to that song without bobbing my head.

And with your artistic twist, Cach, head is bobbing all the more!

    Clarification:

The head bobs to the side, not up and down.

Cach, you are almost ready for an album I think. That is hillarious that it worked out that way. I really like that idea though. so cool.
